Sperm donation in Vietnam: clinics, costs and legal position
Women who are unmarried and wish to have a child can receive fertility treatment with donor sperm in Vietnam. This route may also be available to women in a lesbian relationship. The anonymous sperm bank process, the choice of IUI or IVF, and the partner's legal position need careful attention. Treatment experience is also documented in Hanoi. The individual clinic's services and the requirements you meet determine your options.

Key points at a glance
- Vietnam provides for donor sperm treatment for certain married couples and single women wishing to have a child. Access for unmarried women was available before the decree effective from October 2025.
- Women in lesbian relationships may also receive treatment through this route. The partner does not automatically become a second legal parent.
- The regulated system assigns donor sperm anonymously. Finding a person you know to donate to the sperm bank does not mean that his sample will be used for you.
- Whether IUI or IVF is appropriate, which samples are available and the overall cost depend on your medical situation and the particular centre.
Who can receive donor sperm in Vietnam?
Vietnamese rules identify two main categories of recipients: the wife in a couple whose infertility is due to the husband, and a single woman who wants a child. Her eggs must be suitable for fertilisation when donor sperm is used. Health conditions for treatment and pregnancy also apply. The Department of Justice in Hà Tĩnh explains these criteria under the current rules. Official explanation of recipient conditions.
One important legal basis is Decree 207/2025/NĐ-CP, which came into force on 1 October 2025. Among other matters, it regulates the donation, receipt, storage and use of sperm, eggs and embryos. Circular 38/2025/TT-BYT supplements the health assessment requirements. These provisions concern medically organised procedures at authorised facilities. They should not be read as general permission for every private donation arrangement. Decree 207/2025/NĐ-CP, Circular 38/2025/TT-BYT.
Keep the dates in perspective when reading older information. Single women did not first become eligible in 2025; clinics had described their treatment years before. Newer legislation explains the rules that apply today, while earlier clinical accounts show which methods were already being used.

What treatment can lesbian couples consider?
The Tâm Anh hospital group specifically describes IUI and IVF for lesbian couples. Treatment takes place through the route provided for single women. Ask the particular location which admission requirements apply to both of you. Tâm Anh: fertility treatment for female couples.
The main legal distinction concerns joint parenthood. Under Article 8(2) of the Law on Marriage and Family, Vietnam does not recognise same-sex marriages. Receiving treatment does not, therefore, automatically make a woman's partner a second legal mother. As a couple, you need to decide who should carry the pregnancy and how your family can be protected legally. Law on Marriage and Family 52/2014/QH13.
ROPA is a different arrangement, in which one partner provides eggs and the other carries the pregnancy. In the Vietnamese treatment route described by Tâm Anh, the egg provider and the woman carrying the pregnancy are the same person. Article 5 of the decree applies separate conditions to a married woman receiving donated eggs. The availability of IVF using donor sperm does not establish general permission for ROPA. If this sharing of roles is what you want, obtain a specific medical and legal assessment before booking the procedure. Decree 207/2025/NĐ-CP, Article 5.
Donor sperm treatment documented in Hanoi
Hanoi has documented experience of treatment with donor sperm. Bệnh viện Phụ sản Hà Nội, Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynaecology Hospital, published a description of its process in 2018. It explains how patients find a voluntary donor for the bank and later receive a different sample assigned anonymously. This is evidence of a procedure used at that time. Its older timelines and treatment outcomes are not current assurances. Phụ sản Hà Nội: description of the sperm bank procedure.
A study from Hanoi Medical University Hospital, published in 2026, examined 142 stimulation cycles using donor sperm and ICSI in 2022 and 2023. Of these, 61 were cycles among single women. This is a different hospital from Phụ sản Hà Nội. The study records actual treatments, but does not state how many patients were in lesbian relationships. It mainly assessed fertilisation and embryo development, not an overall live birth rate. Study of IVF with donor sperm at Hanoi Medical University Hospital.
A familiar name or advanced technology does not settle clinic selection. An IVF department, a donor programme currently accepting patients and experience with your family situation are separate requirements. Confirm which of these the actual location fulfils and who will coordinate the treatment.
How does the sperm bank process work?
Anonymous allocation is a feature that can substantially affect your plans. Article 3 says sperm donation and receipt in the regulated system are anonymous between the donor and recipient. It is therefore unwise to assume that every Vietnamese sperm bank works like an international catalogue offering free choice of donors. Decree 207/2025/NĐ-CP, Article 3.
Some clinics describe an exchange procedure. You find a person willing to donate to the bank after the required checks, and your own treatment uses a different sample cleared for use. This is documented in the IVFMD information from 2021, as well as the historical Hanoi account. It does not establish a current requirement for every centre to ask recipients to find donors themselves.
For instance, a friend might offer to help you. In such an exchange programme, his donation could enable access to the bank without making him your child's genetic father. If you want a genetic connection to that particular person, state that clearly before proceeding. His willingness to donate does not confirm that you will receive his sample.
First ask whether the centre already has available samples, expects you to find a donor or is not accepting new recipients. Discuss the selection characteristics offered, how samples are cleared and what happens if a sample is unsuitable. Published clinic explanations do not provide a reliable current waiting time for the whole country.
Preparing for the first cycle
For the initial consultation, prepare your medical history, details of earlier pregnancies or treatments, medication and existing reports. Explain whether you are planning alone or with a partner, where you live and your nationality. This helps the clinic identify the documents needed in your situation.
Request the specific list before your appointment. Identification, documents showing marital status and existing medical reports may be required. For foreign documents, find out whether translations or authentication are necessary. This allows you to confirm what the centre will accept before travelling.
The medical assessment should establish whether pregnancy is appropriate for you and which treatment route suits your circumstances. Donor sperm does not replace assessment of your own fertility or counselling about findings that make a method unsuitable. A suitable sample is only one part of planning treatment.
IUI or IVF: understanding the choice
During intrauterine insemination, or IUI, prepared sperm is placed in the uterus by the clinic at the appropriate time. Fertilisation then takes place inside the body. Suitability depends on factors including the fallopian tubes, ovulation and other findings. Depending on the plan, IUI may be done with or without medication to stimulate the ovaries. ASRM: IUI process and suitability.
In IVF, eggs are retrieved and fertilised in a laboratory. ICSI is a fertilisation technique where one sperm is injected into an egg. The clinic should explain which technique your findings medically justify. Using donor sperm does not, on its own, decide the appropriate technique.
Article 6 also sets an important requirement in Vietnam: IUI with donor sperm may only take place at a facility authorised for IVF. This does not mean every recipient must undergo IVF or that every authorised IVF facility has donor samples available. Decree 207/2025/NĐ-CP, Article 6.
The main steps of IVF with donor sperm
The medical procedure is similar to IVF using a partner's sperm. Obtaining the donor sample and clearing it for treatment adds a separate preparation step. The sequence below helps you understand a proposed treatment plan:
- Preparation: Findings, consent forms and the available donor sample are addressed before treatment begins.
- Stimulation and monitoring: Medication encourages several eggs to mature. The clinic checks the response and plans retrieval.
- Egg retrieval and fertilisation: Retrieved eggs are fertilised in the laboratory with the cleared donor sperm, using ICSI if indicated.
- Embryo development and transfer: The clinic monitors development. An embryo may be transferred in the same treatment phase or later after being frozen.
- Pregnancy testing and follow-up: The clinic sets the date for testing and arranges further checks or the transition to pregnancy care.
Not every stimulation cycle produces an embryo suitable for transfer or results in pregnancy. Counselling should include possible cancellation, what to do with additional embryos and treatment risks such as ovarian hyperstimulation. A detailed individual plan is more helpful than a general promise about the number of visits. HFEA: IVF stages and treatment risks.
What screening helps make donation safer?
A profile containing a donor's photograph or occupation answers different questions from medical screening. Relevant areas include personal and family medical history, semen quality, infections and possible inherited risks. Guidance from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine discusses these in detail. It is US clinical guidance, not Vietnam's statutory testing list. ASRM: guidance on gamete and embryo donation.

Ask which tests are required, when they were performed and whether repeat testing is necessary. A negative result can miss a very recent infection. Freezing does not sterilise sperm, and genetic testing cannot rule out every condition. A medically supervised procedure reduces risks without guaranteeing a healthy child.
For private contacts, distinguish complete reports attributable to the individual from screenshots that are hard to verify. Our article on health records before sperm donation can help you prepare. The tests required in your case and how long a result remains informative need professional assessment.
How much do IUI and IVF cost in Vietnam?
The fee for insemination alone does not show the full cost. Treatment with donor sperm combines the medical procedure with arranging the sample. Provider prices can offer guidance if their date and included services are clear:
- In its offer dated 19 October 2026, Việt Mỹ hospital lists an estimated starting cost of VND 1,10,00,000 for an IUI cycle. The final amount depends on factors including medication and the treatment plan. Việt Mỹ: IUI services and costs.
- On 28 March 2025, Tâm Anh published approximate costs of VND 1,50,00,000 to 2,00,00,000 for IUI and VND 12,00,00,000 to 15,00,00,000 for IVF per cycle. These are older provider figures, not binding quotations for 2026. Tâm Anh: fertility treatment costs for female couples.
These amounts are not national tariffs and do not confirm an all-inclusive donor sperm package. They are not a direct price comparison either: a lower starting amount may cover different services. Obtain a written plan listing initial tests, medication, monitoring, sperm preparation and any donor programme charges. For IVF, it should also include retrieval, laboratory services, transfer, freezing and storage.
Budget for the possibility that a first attempt does not lead to a birth. Ask about the cost of another IUI cycle, which charges recur for a later embryo transfer and what is payable after cancellation. If travelling from abroad, include transport, accommodation, translation and extra stays in the same budget.
Vietnam's statutory health insurance, BHYT, excludes assisted reproductive techniques from coverage. This does not mean that every diagnostic investigation or ordinary pregnancy care is also excluded. Private or international insurance must be checked against the actual policy and written confirmation of cover. Vietnamese government: exclusions under Article 23 of the Health Insurance Law.
Waiting periods, travel and chances of success
Separate three periods in your planning: admission and preparation, availability of a sample cleared for use, and the treatment itself. A short medical procedure does not mean the full process can fit into a short trip. IVF stimulation, retrieval and a later transfer may also occur in different phases.
Before confirming travel, establish which tests can be done where you live, when you need to be at the centre and whom to contact about changes or symptoms. Discuss how medication, checks and early pregnancy care will be arranged after you return. The number of travel days cannot be given reliably without an individual plan.
For success figures, ask what outcome is measured and what the denominator is. Fertilised eggs are not pregnancies, and pregnancies are not live births. A rate per embryo transfer cannot be compared directly with a rate per cycle started. Age, findings and the patient group included should also be relevant. The Hanoi study on fertilisation and embryo development cannot provide your personal chance of a birth.
Known donors, private donation and home insemination
You may prefer a donor whom you can meet or who will be available to your child later. That is different from anonymous allocation in a clinical programme. Clarify early whether the man will only donate, remain in contact or share responsibility as a father. The last option needs separate preparation for a co-parenting family. The role's name does not, by itself, settle his legal status.
A signed agreement and a negative infection result cannot replace a regulated treatment process or assessment of parenthood. If you specifically want a known person's sample, consider the medical route and legal effects together before conception. The parenthood rules for clinical treatment should not automatically be extended to private conception.
Vaginal home insemination is not IUI. In a clinical IUI, trained staff place prepared sperm into the uterus. Do not try to insert sperm or a catheter into the uterus at home. A general explanation of a method also does not confirm that your particular private arrangement is permitted in Vietnam.
Pressure to have sex, avoid investigations or accept unclear arrangements is a reason to end contact. Responsible planning requires voluntary choices, verifiable information and clear expectations among everyone involved.
Who becomes the legal parent?
Article 93 of the Law on Marriage and Family governs parenthood following assisted reproduction. A single woman is the mother of the child born through that treatment. Treatment covered by the law creates no parent-child relationship between the child and the sperm, egg or embryo donor. For a married woman, the provision refers to the general parentage rules in Article 88. Law on Marriage and Family, Articles 88 and 93.
For a female couple, protecting the partner remains a separate matter. Consult a Vietnamese family law professional about your actual situation, including decisions about the child and arrangements following separation or a parent's death. If your marriage took place abroad or you also reside in another country, recognition in the countries concerned needs attention.
Keep consent forms, treatment reports and birth documents safe. Before treatment begins, find out what records the clinic issues and what you need for birth registration or recognition in your country of residence. You can then arrange missing documents in time.
Information about origins and planning another child
Legal anonymity between the donor and recipient does not promise that identification will remain impossible for life. DNA databases can show genetic connections through relatives. The UK's HFEA explains this practical risk, but its UK information rights do not establish rights in Vietnam. HFEA: DNA testing and donor identity.
What matters for your child is information that can actually be provided. Which non-identifying details will you receive? Can the centre pass on new medical information later? How will you maintain a contact route if you move? Store the documents so that they remain accessible in the long term. Our article on talking to your child about sperm donation helps with age-appropriate conversations.
Raise a possible sibling plan early. Allocation to one woman or married couple does not simply mean one child per donor. Article 7 permits remaining material to be stored for further children of the same recipient or married couple. It cannot guarantee that enough suitable samples will still be available. Decree 207/2025/NĐ-CP, Articles 3 and 7.
A storage agreement should state what will be retained, who may use it, the charges and how continued storage decisions will be made. Do not rely only on a verbal statement during the first attempt when planning for another child.
Becoming a sperm donor in Vietnam
Contact a facility authorised for storage and first ask whether it is accepting donors. The process includes eligibility assessment, investigations and consent. Ask how your data is protected and how to communicate important new health information later.
Article 3 provides for donation at only one authorised storage facility. Disclose any previous donation at another centre. The rule concerns the institution rather than a blanket restriction on how many individual samples you may provide. The sources reviewed do not establish a reliable nationwide compensation amount. Decree 207/2025/NĐ-CP, Article 3.
Foreign patients and samples brought from abroad
Services for international patients do not confirm acceptance into a donor programme. If you do not live in Vietnam or hold another nationality, seek an answer for your particular circumstances: acceptance for treatment, proof of marital status, consent language and documents for your future family.
A foreign sperm bank's offer of international delivery also does not establish permission to import into Vietnam. Before ordering, the receiving clinic must check the proposed route and clarify documents, permissions and specialist transport. Rules for transfers between institutions are not general approval for every import.
If a procedure such as ROPA cannot be reliably confirmed locally and you consider another country, the assessment must begin again there. Access, donor procedures, costs and legal parenthood depend on the legal systems involved.
Questions for the first clinic consultation
A few focused questions can shape your first discussion with a centre in Hanoi or elsewhere. The answers should form a consistent plan before you spend on medication, donor samples or travel:
- Is this location currently accepting patients with your marital status and, where relevant, nationality into its donor programme?
- Will the sample come from existing stock, an exchange procedure or another route the clinic has explicitly confirmed?
- Why does the team recommend IUI or IVF, and which stages require your physical presence?
- What is the total cost of the first attempt, and what charges apply to repeat treatment, storage or cancellation?
- Which documents and contact routes remain available for parenthood matters, medical updates and a future sibling?
