Sperm donation in Vietnam: clinics, costs and legal rules
Unmarried women can access fertility treatment with donor sperm in Vietnam. That route may include women in lesbian relationships. Important questions include how anonymous sperm banks work, whether IUI or IVF is appropriate, and the legal position of a partner. Hanoi also has documented experience with this treatment. The services at the particular clinic and your eligibility determine what is possible.

Key points
- Vietnam provides access to donor sperm treatment for certain married couples and single women who want children. Unmarried women could access treatment before the decree effective in October 2025.
- This route may also be used by women in lesbian relationships. Treatment does not automatically establish the partner as another legal parent.
- The regulated system allocates donor sperm anonymously. Bringing someone you know to donate to a sperm bank does not mean you will receive that person's sample.
- The appropriate method, IUI or IVF, the samples available and the full cost depend on your medical circumstances and the centre providing care.
Who can be a donor sperm recipient in Vietnam?
The current rules describe two main groups: the wife in a couple with infertility attributable to the husband, and a single woman wishing to have a child. A recipient's eggs must be suitable for fertilization when donor sperm is used. There are also health requirements for treatment and pregnancy. Hà Tĩnh's Department of Justice explains these eligibility criteria under the current regulation. Official explanation of recipient eligibility.
Decree 207/2025/NĐ-CP, effective 1 October 2025, is an important legal basis. It covers matters including the donation, receipt, storage and use of sperm, eggs and embryos. Circular 38/2025/TT-BYT supplements the provisions for health assessments. These measures concern medically organized treatment in authorized facilities; they are not general approval of every privately arranged donation. Decree 207/2025/NĐ-CP, Circular 38/2025/TT-BYT.
Older accounts need to be read with their dates in mind. Single women did not gain access for the first time in 2025; clinics described their treatment years earlier. Current legislation establishes the rules now, while older clinical information records approaches already used in practice.

What can lesbian couples access?
Tâm Anh hospital group explicitly discusses IUI and IVF for lesbian couples. It describes treatment through the route for single women. Confirm with the individual location which admission requirements apply to your situation. Tâm Anh: fertility treatment for female couples.
Joint legal parenthood is the important boundary. Vietnam does not recognize same-sex marriage under Article 8(2) of the Law on Marriage and Family. A woman's eligibility for care does not automatically establish her partner as the second legal mother. Together, you need to decide who will carry the pregnancy and how to protect your family legally. Law on Marriage and Family 52/2014/QH13.
ROPA is a separate procedure: one partner supplies the eggs and the other carries the pregnancy. For the Vietnamese route it explains, Tâm Anh describes the same woman as both egg provider and the person carrying the pregnancy. Article 5 of the decree sets separate eligibility conditions for a married recipient of donated eggs. It is therefore not possible to infer general permission for ROPA from access to IVF using donor sperm. Have this specific procedure assessed medically and legally before booking if that is the arrangement you want. Decree 207/2025/NĐ-CP, Article 5.
What is documented in Hanoi?
There is documented experience with donor sperm treatment in Hanoi. In 2018, Bệnh viện Phụ sản Hà Nội, Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, published an explanation of its process. It describes patients recruiting a voluntary donor for the bank before receiving another anonymously allocated sample. This account documents practice at that time; old schedules and reported results should not be treated as current promises. Phụ sản Hà Nội: explanation of the sperm bank process.
A 2026 study from Hanoi Medical University Hospital examined 142 ovarian stimulation cycles with donor sperm and ICSI in 2022 and 2023. This included 61 cycles among single women. It is a different hospital from Phụ sản Hà Nội. The study demonstrates actual treatment, but does not identify the number of patients in lesbian relationships. It primarily investigated fertilization and embryo development, rather than an overall live birth rate. Study of IVF with donor sperm at Hanoi Medical University Hospital.
For clinic selection, technology and reputation alone are not enough. An IVF department, a donor program accepting patients now and experience with your family circumstances are distinct requirements. Ask the specific location which it can meet and who will coordinate your treatment.
Understanding Vietnamese sperm banks
Anonymous allocation can change how you need to plan. Article 3 specifies that donor and recipient remain anonymous to each other when sperm is donated and received within the regulated system. Do not assume that every Vietnamese sperm bank offers a freely searchable international donor catalogue. Decree 207/2025/NĐ-CP, Article 3.
Some clinics describe an exchange model. You recruit someone willing to donate to the bank after screening, and receive a different sample cleared for your treatment. The IVFMD information published in 2021 documents this alongside the older Hanoi account. These descriptions do not establish that every centre currently requires recipients to find their own donor.
Suppose a friend agrees to help. His contribution may make access to the bank possible under such an exchange, without him being the genetic father of your child. If the genetic connection to that particular person is important to you, make this clear at the start. A willing donor is not a guarantee that you will be allocated his sperm.
Before proceeding, establish whether there is available stock, whether the centre expects you to recruit a donor, or whether it has stopped accepting new recipients. Discuss available selection characteristics, how samples are cleared and what happens when a sample is unsuitable. A reliable current nationwide waiting time cannot be established from these clinic publications.
Getting ready for a first treatment cycle
Prepare your medical history, information about previous pregnancies or treatments, medications and existing test reports for the first visit. Let the clinic know whether you are planning alone or with a partner, your place of residence and your nationality. It can then explain which documents your situation requires.
Ask for an actual document list in advance. This might include identification, proof of marital status and medical records. If your documents come from another country, clarify translation or authentication requirements. Doing this before travelling helps establish which evidence the facility accepts.
A medical assessment needs to consider whether pregnancy is appropriate and which treatment fits your circumstances. Donor sperm is not a substitute for investigating your own fertility or discussing findings that make a method unsuitable. Even with an eligible sample, there is still personal treatment planning to do.
Choosing between IUI and IVF
In intrauterine insemination, or IUI, prepared sperm is placed in the uterus by the clinic at the appropriate time. Fertilization occurs in the body. Whether this is an option depends on factors such as the fallopian tubes, ovulation and other findings. Depending on your plan, IUI can involve medication to stimulate the ovaries or proceed without it. ASRM: IUI process and requirements.
IVF involves retrieving eggs and fertilizing them in a laboratory. ICSI is a method of fertilization that injects one sperm into an egg. Your clinic should explain which technique has a medical basis in your findings. The fact that you need donor sperm does not settle that choice.
Vietnam also places a specific condition on facilities: Article 6 allows IUI with donor sperm only where the facility is authorized to perform IVF. This does not mean every recipient must undergo IVF, or that all IVF facilities have donor samples available. Decree 207/2025/NĐ-CP, Article 6.
What IVF with donor sperm generally involves
The medical steps are similar to IVF with a partner's sperm. The extra preparation concerns obtaining a donor sample and clearing it for use. This sequence gives you a way to understand the plan:
- Preparation: The team addresses findings, consent and availability of the donor sample before the treatment itself.
- Stimulation and monitoring: Medication encourages the maturation of several eggs. The response is monitored and egg retrieval is scheduled.
- Retrieval and fertilization: Retrieved eggs are fertilized with the cleared donor sperm in the laboratory, using ICSI where indicated.
- Embryo development and transfer: The clinic follows development. Transfer can occur in the same treatment phase or later with an embryo that was frozen.
- Testing and follow-up: The team sets the pregnancy test date and arranges further checks or a transition to pregnancy care.
Not every stimulation produces an embryo suitable for transfer, and not every cycle leads to pregnancy. Counselling should cover possible cancellation, plans for any additional embryos and risks including ovarian hyperstimulation. A personal plan with these details is more useful than a general claim about the number of appointments required. HFEA: IVF stages and risks.
Which screening makes donation safer?
Photographs and occupations on a donor profile do not answer the questions medical screening addresses. Relevant areas include personal and family medical history, sperm quality, infections and potential hereditary risks. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine discusses these in its guidance. This is US clinical guidance, not a statutory Vietnamese test list. ASRM: gamete and embryo donation guidance.

Ask the facility what tests it requires, when they took place and whether they should be repeated. A recent infection may be missed by a negative result. Freezing sperm does not sterilize it, and genetic testing cannot exclude all conditions. Medical oversight reduces risk but cannot guarantee a healthy child.
When contacting donors privately, look for complete reports that can be attributed to the person, rather than relying on screenshots that are difficult to verify. Our article on health documentation before sperm donation helps with this preparation. A professional needs to assess which tests your circumstances require and how long their results remain informative.
The cost of IUI and IVF in Vietnam
An insemination fee on its own is not the total budget. With donor sperm, both the procedure and the supply of the sample need to be considered. You can use published provider prices for orientation as long as you keep their date and inclusions clear:
- Việt Mỹ hospital lists an estimated starting cost of VND 11,000,000 for an IUI cycle in an offer dated 19 October 2026. The amount ultimately charged depends on factors including medications and the treatment plan. Việt Mỹ: IUI services and costs.
- In its information dated 28 March 2025, Tâm Anh estimated VND 15,000,000 to 20,000,000 for IUI and VND 120,000,000 to 150,000,000 for IVF per cycle. These are older provider estimates, not firm 2026 quotations. Tâm Anh: fertility treatment costs for female couples.
Neither example is a national tariff or confirmation of an all-inclusive donor sperm package. Different inclusions also prevent a direct price comparison. Ask for a written breakdown of initial investigations, medication, monitoring, sperm preparation and any donor program charges. IVF costs should also specify retrieval, laboratory work, transfer, freezing and storage.
Include the possibility of more than one attempt in your budget. What would a repeat IUI cycle cost? What fees apply again for another embryo transfer? What are the charges if treatment is cancelled? Travel from another country adds transportation, accommodation, translation and possible extra stays.
BHYT, Vietnam's statutory health insurance, excludes assisted reproductive techniques from its coverage. It does not follow that every diagnostic test or routine pregnancy care is also excluded. Private or international coverage needs to be checked under your actual policy and confirmed in writing. Vietnamese government: Article 23 Health Insurance Law exclusions.
Wait times, travelling and success rates
Your schedule has three parts: admission and preparation, availability of a sample cleared for treatment, and treatment itself. A procedure that takes little time does not mean the whole process can be completed during a short visit. IVF stimulation, retrieval and a subsequent transfer may also belong to separate treatment phases.
Before booking firmly, clarify which tests you can do at home, the dates you need to attend and who is available if appointments move or you develop symptoms. Discuss where to arrange medications, follow-up checks and early pregnancy care after returning home. A reliable number of travel days requires your individual plan.
Ask what outcome any success rate actually measures and what its denominator is. An egg being fertilized is not a pregnancy; pregnancy is not the same as a live birth. Rates per transfer and per cycle started are not directly comparable. Age, findings and the group of patients included should also match your circumstances. Hanoi's study of fertilization and embryo development does not provide a personal likelihood of giving birth.
Using a known donor, private donation and home insemination
Some families want to meet their donor or want him to remain available to a child later. This differs from anonymous allocation in a clinic program. Discuss early whether the man would only donate, keep in contact or share a father's responsibilities. The last arrangement needs separate preparation as a co-parenting family. Whatever you call the role, the label alone does not establish his legal position.
A private agreement and a negative infection test do not take the place of regulated care or a parenthood assessment. If your aim is to use a particular acquaintance's sample, have the medical route and its legal consequences considered together before conception. Rules for parenthood after clinical treatment should not be applied automatically to conception outside that process.
Vaginal home insemination is a different procedure from IUI. Clinical IUI places prepared sperm into the uterus through trained staff. Do not attempt to insert sperm or a catheter into the uterus at home. An explanation of a method is not confirmation that a specific private arrangement is lawful in Vietnam.
If someone pressures you into sex, skipping tests or accepting unclear terms, end the contact. Sound planning requires freely made decisions, information you can check and a shared understanding of everyone's expectations.
Establishing legal parenthood
Article 93 of the Law on Marriage and Family deals with parenthood following assisted reproduction. A single woman is the mother of a child born through that process. Treatment covered by the law does not establish a parent-child relationship between the child and a sperm, egg or embryo donor. Where the woman is married, the provision refers to the general parentage rules in Article 88. Law on Marriage and Family, Articles 88 and 93.
For a female couple, protecting the partner's position is still a separate matter. Discuss the possibilities in your actual circumstances with a Vietnamese family law professional, including decisions about the child and what happens after separation or a parent's death. If you married outside Vietnam or reside in another country as well, recognition in the countries involved also needs to be addressed.
Keep consent documents, medical treatment reports and birth records secure. Find out before treatment what the clinic can issue and which records are required for birth registration or recognition where you live. This gives you time to obtain anything that is missing.
Information about your child's origins and future siblings
Legal anonymity between a donor and recipient is not a promise that their genetic connection will stay undiscoverable. DNA databases may reveal connections through relatives. The UK's HFEA explains this practical issue, but UK information rights do not establish rights under Vietnamese law. HFEA: DNA testing and donor identity.
Focus on what information will actually be available to your child. Which non-identifying details are shared? Can new medical information be passed on later? How will you maintain contact if you move? Store records where they will remain accessible for years. Our article about explaining sperm donation to your child can help with conversations suited to their age.
If you may want another child, bring that up early. Allocation to one woman or married couple does not simply impose one child per donor. Article 7 permits storage of remaining material for further children of that same recipient or married couple. Enough suitable samples still need to exist; the rule does not guarantee their availability. Decree 207/2025/NĐ-CP, Articles 3 and 7.
Put the storage details in an agreement: what is retained, who it may be used for, the fees and how decisions about ongoing storage will be made. Do not base a sibling plan only on a verbal answer during your first attempt.
Applying to be a sperm donor in Vietnam
Start with a facility authorized to store samples and ask whether it is recruiting donors. Eligibility checks, testing and consent form part of the process. Find out how your data will be protected and how to communicate important new health information in the future.
Article 3 allows donation at only one authorized storage institution. Disclose any earlier donation at a different centre. The restriction concerns where you donate, not a blanket limit on the number of samples collected. The sources assessed do not establish a reliable national compensation amount. Decree 207/2025/NĐ-CP, Article 3.
Foreign patients and importing samples
A clinic offering international services does not automatically accept international patients into a donor program. If you live elsewhere or have another nationality, ask about your particular situation: acceptance for treatment, proof of marital status, the language of consent and documents for your future family.
International shipping from a foreign sperm bank also does not establish Vietnamese import permission. Before you purchase a sample, the receiving clinic needs to check the specific route and clarify documentation, permits and specialist transportation. Transfers between facilities and permission for any particular import are not the same thing.
If a procedure such as ROPA cannot be confirmed reliably and you look at treatment in another country, reassess the options there from the start. Eligibility, donation procedures, costs and parenthood depend on the legal systems involved.
Questions to take to your first consultation
A first conversation with a centre in Hanoi or elsewhere can begin with a short set of focused questions. Make sure the answers form a consistent plan before spending on medication, samples or travel:
- Does this location currently accept patients with your marital status and, if relevant, nationality into its donor program?
- Is the sample supplied from current stock, through an exchange or through another route the clinic has expressly confirmed?
- Why does the team suggest IUI or IVF, and which steps require you to be there in person?
- What does the first attempt cost in total, and what additional charges apply for repeat treatment, storage or cancellation?
- Which documents and points of contact remain available for parenthood matters, medical updates and a future sibling?
