Sperm donation in Vietnam: clinics, costs, and the law

Unmarried women who want a child can receive treatment with donor sperm in Vietnam. This route may also be open to women in a lesbian relationship. The anonymous sperm bank process, the choice between IUI and IVF, and the partner's legal status are especially important. Treatment experience has also been documented in Hanoi. What matters is what the individual clinic offers and whether you meet its requirements.

At a glance

  • Vietnam provides for donor sperm treatment for certain married couples and for single women who want a child. Access for unmarried women existed before the decree that took effect in October 2025.
  • Women in a lesbian relationship may also receive treatment through this route. Their partner does not automatically become a second legal parent.
  • Donor sperm is allocated anonymously within the regulated system. Recruiting someone you know to donate to the sperm bank therefore does not mean you will receive his sample.
  • Whether IUI or IVF is suitable, which samples are available, and the total cost depend on your medical situation and the individual center.

Who can receive donor sperm in Vietnam?

Vietnamese rules identify two main groups of recipients: the wife in a couple whose infertility is attributable to the husband, and a single woman who wants a child. To receive treatment with donor sperm, her eggs must be suitable for fertilization. Health requirements for treatment and pregnancy also apply. The Department of Justice in Hà Tĩnh explains these criteria under the current rules. Official explanation of recipient eligibility.

An important legal basis is Decree 207/2025/NĐ-CP, which took effect on October 1, 2025. It regulates, among other things, the donation, receipt, storage, and use of sperm, eggs, and embryos. Circular 38/2025/TT-BYT supplements the health assessment requirements. These rules concern medically organized procedures at authorized facilities; they do not establish general permission for every private donation arrangement. Decree 207/2025/NĐ-CP, Circular 38/2025/TT-BYT.

When reading older information, remember that single women did not first gain access in 2025. Clinics described this treatment years earlier. Newer legislation and older treatment experience answer different questions: what the rules are today, and which procedures were already being used in practice.

What is possible for lesbian couples?

The Tâm Anh hospital group explicitly describes IUI and IVF for lesbian couples. Treatment follows the route available to single women. Ask the specific location which admission requirements apply to you as a couple. Tâm Anh: fertility treatment for female couples.

The key legal boundary concerns joint parenthood: Vietnam does not recognize same-sex marriages under Article 8(2) of the Law on Marriage and Family. A woman's access to treatment therefore does not automatically make her partner a second legal mother. As a couple, you need to address two decisions: who will carry the pregnancy, and how can your family obtain legal protection? Law on Marriage and Family 52/2014/QH13.

ROPA is another distinct question. With this method, one partner provides the eggs and the other carries the pregnancy. The Vietnamese treatment route described by Tâm Anh instead involves the same woman providing the eggs and carrying the pregnancy. Article 5 of the decree makes receiving donated eggs subject to separate requirements for a married recipient. Access to IVF with donor sperm therefore does not establish general permission for ROPA. If this division of roles is what you want, obtain an explicit medical and legal assessment of that procedure before booking. Decree 207/2025/NĐ-CP, Article 5.

Donor sperm treatment in Hanoi

Donor sperm treatment is documented in Hanoi. Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, Bệnh viện Phụ sản Hà Nội, published a description of its process as early as 2018. It also explains how patients recruit a voluntary donor for the bank and then receive a different, anonymously allocated sample. The article records a procedure from that time; its old timelines or treatment results are not a current commitment. Phụ sản Hà Nội: description of the sperm bank process.

A separate study from Hanoi Medical University Hospital was published in 2026. It examined 142 stimulation cycles using donor sperm and ICSI in 2022 and 2023, including 61 cycles involving single women. This is a different hospital from Phụ sản Hà Nội. The study documents actual treatment. It does not report how many patients were in lesbian relationships. Its main outcomes concerned fertilization and embryo development, not a general live birth rate. Study of IVF using donor sperm at Hanoi Medical University Hospital.

Choosing a clinic therefore involves more than its name or the technology it offers. An IVF department, a donor program currently accepting patients, and experience with your family situation are three separate things. Have the specific location confirm which of these requirements it meets and who coordinates treatment.

How does a Vietnamese sperm bank work?

Anonymous allocation is a feature that can significantly affect your plans. Under Article 3 of the decree, sperm donation and receipt within the regulated system take place anonymously between donor and recipient. A freely browsable international donor catalog is therefore not the right default picture for every Vietnamese sperm bank. Decree 207/2025/NĐ-CP, Article 3.

Some clinics describe an exchange process: you recruit a voluntary donor who donates to the bank after screening. Your treatment then uses a different sample that has been cleared for use. As well as the historical Hanoi article, the IVFMD information from 2021 documents this approach. It does not establish that every center currently requires you to find a donor yourself.

Consider a friend who is willing to help you. In an exchange program of this kind, his donation may enable access to the bank without him becoming your child's genetic father. If his particular genetic connection matters to you, make that clear beforehand. Agreeing to donate is not a promise that you will receive his sperm.

First establish whether the center already has available samples, expects you to recruit someone, or is not currently accepting new recipients. Ask about the selection characteristics offered, the sample clearance process, and what happens if a sample is unsuitable. The published clinic descriptions do not establish a reliable current waiting time for the entire country.

How do you prepare for the first treatment cycle?

Your medical history, previous pregnancies or treatments, medications, and existing test results are important for the initial consultation. Also explain whether you are planning alone or with a partner, where you live, and your nationality. This allows the clinic to tell you which documents it needs for your situation.

Request a specific document list before your appointment. It may include identification, evidence of marital status, and existing medical reports; for foreign documents, check whether translations or authentication are needed. You can then find out before traveling which documents the facility actually accepts.

The medical evaluation should establish whether pregnancy is medically appropriate and which route fits your circumstances. Donor sperm does not replace an assessment of your own fertility or counseling about a finding that makes a particular method unsuitable. A suitable sample alone does not complete the treatment plan.

IUI or IVF: which treatment may be suitable?

During intrauterine insemination, or IUI, the clinic places prepared sperm into the uterus at the appropriate time. Fertilization happens inside the body. Suitability depends on factors including the fallopian tubes, ovulation, and other findings. Depending on the plan, IUI may take place with or without medication to stimulate the ovaries. ASRM: IUI procedure and requirements.

With IVF, eggs are retrieved and fertilized in a laboratory. ICSI is a fertilization technique in which a single sperm is injected into an egg. The clinic should explain which technique is medically justified by your findings. Using donor sperm alone does not answer that question.

Vietnam also has an important authorization rule: under Article 6, IUI with donor sperm may only be performed at a facility authorized for IVF. This does not mean that every recipient needs IVF, or that every IVF facility has donor samples available. Decree 207/2025/NĐ-CP, Article 6.

The basic stages of IVF with donor sperm

The medical process resembles IVF using a partner's sperm. Obtaining and clearing the donor sample is an additional preparation step. This sequence helps you understand a treatment plan:

  1. Preparation: Test results, consent, and the available donor sample are addressed before treatment itself begins.
  2. Stimulation and monitoring: Medication encourages several eggs to mature. The clinic monitors the response and plans egg retrieval.
  3. Egg retrieval and fertilization: The retrieved eggs are fertilized in the laboratory using the cleared donor sperm, with ICSI if indicated.
  4. Embryo development and transfer: The clinic monitors development. Transfer may take place during the same treatment phase or later using a previously frozen embryo.
  5. Pregnancy test and follow-up: The clinic sets the testing date and arranges further monitoring or the transition to pregnancy care.

Not every stimulation cycle produces an embryo suitable for transfer or results in pregnancy. Counseling should therefore also cover possible cancellations, plans for additional embryos, and treatment risks such as ovarian hyperstimulation. A detailed personal plan is more useful than a blanket promise about the number of appointments. HFEA: IVF stages and treatment risks.

Which tests help make donation safer?

A donor profile showing a photo or occupation answers different questions from medical screening. Relevant areas include personal and family medical history, semen quality, infections, and potential inherited risks. Guidance from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine covers these areas in detail. It is US clinical guidance, not Vietnam's statutory testing checklist. ASRM: guidance on gamete and embryo donation.

Counseling should address both clearance of the donor sample and the health of the woman who wants to become pregnant.

Ask which tests the facility requires, when they were performed, and whether they need to be repeated. A negative result can miss a very recent infection. Freezing does not sterilize sperm, and genetic testing cannot rule out every condition. Medical supervision reduces risks, but cannot guarantee a healthy child.

When meeting donors privately, distinguish complete reports attributable to an individual from screenshots that are difficult to verify. Our article on health records before sperm donation can help you prepare. Which tests are needed in a particular case, and how long a result remains informative, require professional assessment.

What do IUI and IVF cost in Vietnam?

A single insemination price tells you little about the full cost. Treatment using donor sperm combines the medical procedure with provision of the sample. Published provider prices can offer a starting point if you keep their date and scope in view:

  • In an offer dated October 19, 2026, Việt Mỹ hospital gives an estimated starting price of VND 11,000,000 for an IUI cycle. Actual costs depend on factors including medication and the treatment plan. Việt Mỹ: IUI services and costs.
  • On March 28, 2025, Tâm Anh published indicative figures of VND 15,000,000 to 20,000,000 for IUI and VND 120,000,000 to 150,000,000 for IVF per cycle. These are older provider estimates, not binding offers for 2026. Tâm Anh: fertility treatment costs for female couples.

These figures are not a national fee schedule or confirmation of a complete donor sperm package. Nor are they a direct price comparison: a lower starting figure may include different services. Request a written estimate listing initial tests, medication, monitoring, sperm preparation, and any donor program costs. For IVF, the breakdown should also cover egg retrieval, laboratory services, transfer, freezing, and storage.

Budget for the possibility that the first attempt does not lead to a birth. What does another IUI cycle cost? Which fees recur for a later embryo transfer? What is charged if a cycle is canceled? If you travel from abroad, include transportation, accommodations, translation, and extra stays in the same budget.

Vietnam's statutory health insurance, BHYT, excludes assisted reproductive techniques from coverage. That does not mean every diagnostic test or routine pregnancy care is also excluded. Check private or international insurance against the specific policy and written confirmation of coverage. Vietnamese government: exclusions under Article 23 of the Health Insurance Law.

Waiting times, travel plans, and chances of success

Separate three periods when planning: admission and preparation, availability of a cleared sample, and treatment itself. A brief medical procedure does not mean the entire process can be fitted into a short trip. With IVF, stimulation, retrieval, and a later transfer may also fall into different phases.

Before making firm bookings, establish which tests can be done where you live, when you must be at the clinic, and whom to contact about schedule changes or symptoms. Also discuss where medication, monitoring, and early pregnancy care will be managed after you return home. No reliable number of travel days can be given without an individual plan.

When considering success figures, always ask what outcome is measured and what the denominator is. Fertilized eggs are not pregnancies, and pregnancies are not live births. A rate per embryo transfer cannot be compared directly with a rate per cycle started. Age, clinical findings, and the patient group included also need to be relevant. The Hanoi study on fertilization and embryo development therefore does not establish your personal chance of a birth.

Known donors, private donation, and home insemination

Some people want a donor they can meet personally or who can remain available to their child. That goal differs from anonymous allocation in a clinical program. Establish early whether the man will only donate, stay in contact, or take responsibility as a father. The last option calls for separate planning of a co-parenting family. The label you choose does not, by itself, determine his legal status.

A private contract and a negative infection test replace neither a regulated treatment process nor an assessment of parenthood. Especially if you specifically want to use a known donor's sperm, the medical route and legal consequences need to be considered together before conception. The parenthood rules following clinical treatment cannot simply be transferred to private conception.

Vaginal home insemination is not IUI either. In IUI, trained clinical staff place prepared sperm into the uterus. Do not try to put sperm or a catheter into the uterus at home. A general guide to a method also does not confirm that a particular private arrangement is permitted in Vietnam.

Pressure to have sex, skip testing, or accept unclear arrangements is a reason to end contact. A sound family-building plan requires voluntary decisions, verifiable information, and clear expectations for everyone involved.

Who becomes the legal parent?

Article 93 of the Law on Marriage and Family governs parenthood following assisted reproduction. A single woman is the mother of a child born to her through this process. Treatment covered by the law does not create a parent-child relationship between the child and the sperm, egg, or embryo donor. For a married woman, the provision refers to the general parentage rules in Article 88. Law on Marriage and Family, Articles 88 and 93.

For a female couple, the partner's legal protection remains a separate issue. Ask a Vietnamese family law professional which options exist in your actual situation, including decisions concerning the child and what happens after separation or a parent's death. A marriage celebrated abroad or residence in another country adds the question of recognition in the countries involved.

Keep consent forms, treatment reports, and birth documents secure. Before starting treatment, find out which records the clinic issues and what is required for birth registration or recognition in your country of residence. That gives you time to obtain any missing documents.

Information about origins and planning for a sibling

Legal anonymity between donor and recipient does not promise that identification will remain impossible for life. DNA databases may reveal genetic connections through relatives, too. The UK's HFEA explains this practical risk; its UK information rights do not establish equivalent rights in Vietnam. HFEA: DNA testing and donor identity.

What matters for your child is the information actually available. What non-identifying details will you receive? Can the clinic pass on new medical information later? How will you keep a contact route if you move? Store documents so they remain accessible over the long term. Our article on talking with your child about sperm donation offers help with age-appropriate conversations.

Include a possible sibling in your plans early. Allocation to one woman or married couple does not simply mean one child per donor. Article 7 permits remaining material to be stored for further children of the same recipient or married couple. It does not guarantee that suitable samples will still be available or sufficient. Decree 207/2025/NĐ-CP, Articles 3 and 7.

A storage agreement should therefore specify what is kept, who may use it, the fees, and how decisions about continued storage are made. Do not rely solely on a verbal statement during the first attempt when planning for a sibling.

If you want to become a sperm donor in Vietnam

Contact a facility authorized to store samples and first ask whether it currently accepts donors. The process includes eligibility assessment, testing, and consent. Ask how your data is protected and how you can pass on important new health information later.

Article 3 provides for donation at only one authorized storage facility. Do not conceal a previous donation at another center. This rule concerns the facility, not a blanket limit on the number of individual samples you can provide. The reviewed sources do not establish a reliable nationwide compensation amount. Decree 207/2025/NĐ-CP, Article 3.

Foreign patients and samples from abroad

Services advertised to international patients do not confirm admission to a donor program. If you do not live in Vietnam or have another nationality, obtain answers for your particular circumstances: acceptance for treatment, marital status documents, the language of consent forms, and records for your future family.

An overseas sperm bank offering international shipping does not establish permission to import into Vietnam either. Before ordering a sample, the receiving clinic must assess the proposed route and clarify the documents, permits, and specialist transport required. Rules on transfers between facilities are not blanket approval for every import.

If a procedure such as ROPA cannot be reliably confirmed locally and you consider treatment in another country, the assessment starts again there. Access, donor procedures, costs, and parenthood depend on the legal systems involved.

Useful questions for the first clinic consultation

A few focused questions can guide the first conversation with a center in Hanoi or elsewhere. The answers should fit together before you spend money on medication, samples, or travel:

  • Is this specific location currently accepting someone with your marital status and, where relevant, nationality into its donor program?
  • How will the sample be supplied: existing stock, an exchange process, or another explicitly confirmed route?
  • Why does the team recommend IUI or IVF, and which steps require you to attend in person?
  • What is the total cost of the first attempt, and which costs arise for repeat attempts, storage, or cancellation?
  • Which documents and contact routes remain available for parenthood matters, medical updates, and planning another child?

Frequently asked questions about sperm donation in Vietnam

Can lesbian couples have IVF with donor sperm in Vietnam?A woman in a lesbian relationship may receive treatment through the route provided for single women. Vietnamese clinic information describes both IUI and IVF for this purpose. The specific location must confirm whether it can accept you. Treatment does not automatically make your partner a second legal mother.
Does using donor sperm always mean I need IVF?Depending on the medical situation, donor sperm may also be used for IUI. Whether IUI or IVF is appropriate depends on the recipient's findings and treatment plan. In Vietnam, even IUI with donor sperm must take place at a facility authorized to perform IVF; this does not mean you must undergo IVF yourself.
Will I receive my friend's sample if I bring him as a donor? In an anonymous exchange program, you receive a different cleared sample from the sperm bank. The donor you bring contributes to the bank's supply, but does not automatically become your child's genetic father. If you specifically want to use his sperm, discuss that request with the facility and obtain legal clarification before making any commitments.
Can we use my partner's eggs for ROPA in Vietnam?Access to IVF with donor sperm does not establish general permission for ROPA. The process described by Tâm Anh uses the same woman as the egg provider and the person carrying the pregnancy; receiving donated eggs has separate requirements. For this specific plan, rely on an explicitly assessed medical and legal answer.
Does Vietnamese health insurance cover treatment?Vietnam's statutory health insurance, BHYT, excludes assisted reproductive techniques from coverage. This is not a blanket statement about every test or routine pregnancy care. With private or international insurance, check your policy and, where possible, obtain written confirmation of coverage before treatment begins.
Can foreign patients receive donor sperm in Vietnam?Advertising for international patients does not establish admission to a donor program. The facility must assess your nationality, marital status, required documents, and proposed treatment route specifically. If your family has connections to several countries, birth registration and legal parenthood must also be clarified for your actual circumstances.
Is there an exact one-child-per-sperm-donor limit in Vietnam?Allocation to one woman or married couple is not the same as a blanket one-child limit. The decree permits remaining material to be stored for further children of the same recipient or married couple. Whether suitable samples remain available depends on the supply and the specific storage agreement.
Can a private contract reliably rule out legal fatherhood?A private contract alone does not guarantee that legal fatherhood is excluded. Rules on parenthood following legally regulated assisted reproduction cannot simply be applied to private conception. The medical route and legal effects of the actual arrangement should be professionally assessed before conception.
